World Energy Day: The Challenge of Building a More Sustainable Future

Every February 14, we celebrate World Energy Day, a key opportunity to reflect on the fundamental role energy plays in our daily lives—and the urgent need to transform the current energy model.
In a global context marked by climate change and the depletion of natural resources, this day reminds us of the importance of moving toward more efficient energy use and promoting renewable sources to reduce environmental impact. As society and industry evolve, energy demand continues to grow. Without responsible and sustainable management, the consequences can be devastating: rising greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and dependence on finite resources like oil, coal, or gas.
Commitment to the Energy Transition
At Edison Next, we work to accelerate the energy transition through solutions that not only promote clean energy generation but also optimize energy consumption. As a key player in transforming the energy model in Spain and Europe, we are committed to self-consumption technologies and energy efficiency that help businesses, governments, and cities reduce their carbon footprint and move toward a more sustainable future.
In the area of self-consumption, Edison Next promotes the installation of photovoltaic systems, enabling industries and buildings to generate their own electricity from the sun. This reduces dependence on the electricity grid while providing significant energy bill savings and a direct reduction in CO₂ emissions.
In addition to solar, we also invest in biomass as a sustainable alternative in various sectors—using organic waste to generate heat and electricity efficiently and in an environmentally responsible way. We also strengthen our commitment to trigeneration, an advanced technology that simultaneously produces electricity, heat, and cooling, maximizing energy use and improving efficiency in industries, hospitals, and large infrastructure projects.
Energy Efficiency as a Cornerstone
However, the energy transition isn’t just about changing how we generate energy—much of the solution lies in using it more efficiently.
At Edison Next, we’ve spent years developing energy efficiency solutions that reduce consumption while enhancing both operational performance and comfort. In cities and municipalities, efficient LED lighting has become a major contributor to reducing public lighting electricity use, improving urban sustainability and lighting quality.
In the industrial sector, heat pumps are helping replace conventional heating and cooling systems with innovative, more efficient alternatives. And in buildings, the use of Building Management Systems (BMS) enables real-time monitoring and optimization of energy use, helping avoid waste by ensuring consumption aligns with the actual needs of each space and moment.
Making Sustainability Affordable
Beyond providing these technological solutions, Edison Next is also working to facilitate investment in energy efficiency through financial support mechanisms. As an Authorized Delegate in the Energy Savings Certificate (CAE) system, we promote projects that deliver real energy savings and allow businesses and public administrations to monetize their efficiency improvements, making the shift to sustainability more accessible and financially viable.
World Energy Day reminds us that energy sustainability is a shared responsibility among citizens, businesses, and governments. Transitioning to a model based on renewable sources and efficient consumption is not only an environmental necessity—it’s also a powerful economic and social opportunity.
At Edison Next, we reaffirm our commitment to this goal by driving innovation and developing solutions that optimize energy use, reduce emissions, and help build a more efficient and sustainable energy system. Together, we can create a cleaner, smarter, and more responsible energy future.
