Self-Consumption as a Driver of Green Energy in Spain

Self-consumption plays a key role in Spain’s energy transformation—not only because it is still developing, but also because it is becoming increasingly significant within the national economic landscape. Self-consumption can contribute to electrification savings, emissions reduction, energy transition, and the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals, both in households and businesses. Moreover, it is essential to decarbonizing the energy sector and turning energy into a truly renewable source.

Under this framework, Spain has become one of the world’s leading countries in self-consumption. This progress supports carbon footprint reduction and ecosystem protection, while also reflecting the growing awareness among citizens and large companies, positioning self-consumption as a beneficial alternative for the country.

At Edison Next, we are firmly committed to the innovation, development, and adoption of self-consumption as a pathway to a more sustainable world, offering full assistance and installation by our specialists. Thanks to the self-consumption systems installed across Spain, approximately 1.9 million tons of CO₂ emissions were avoided in 2024.

According to the annual report published by APPA (the Renewable Energy Association), battery installations associated with self-consumption projects increased in 2024. Although Spain still lacks an official registry, the report analyzed a sample of over 1,000 installations nationwide to gather insight into this growing sector.

Last year also marked the emergence of a new market niche, with the launch of the first large-scale industrial storage projects. By the end of the year, cumulative savings reported by APPA reached €1,714 for residential installations (24.2% of the investment) and €22,996 for industrial ones (33.3% of the investment). These figures reflect Spain’s strong investment in the self-consumption model. Total investment in 2024 reached €1.259 billion, with €467 million in the residential sector and €792 million in industrial installations—signifying growth compared to 2023.

Looking ahead, employment and GDP figures are expected to evolve in line with the reduction in newly installed capacity recorded in 2024. This ongoing expansion of self-consumption and related projects will likely result in increasingly competitive pricing.

The growth of this self-consumption model is concentrated mainly in Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community, which together account for nearly 50% of total installed capacity. In this context, regional governments play a crucial role by managing subsidies, tax deductions, and simplifying administrative procedures—all of which support self-consumption, alongside other sociodemographic factors.

Key elements such as industrial capacity, technology, digitalization, and expertise are essential to turning self-consumption into a central pillar of the energy transition. Digitalizing administrative processes and managing energy surpluses are also crucial to promoting self-consumption, as these installations significantly reduce electricity demand. The APPA report “The Moment of Electrification” indicates that electrified households face energy costs up to 64% lower than those that depend on fossil fuels. In 2024, the average hourly electricity price ranged from €33.73/MWh during off-peak hours to €94.81/MWh at peak times.

At Edison Next, we are enabling companies, institutions, and public or private buildings to adopt this greener, more efficient form of energy production and consumption. Our goal is to support energy policy development and drive the growth of self-consumption in Spain, contributing to a more sustainable future.
