This summer Spain is facing a new temperature record. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has already issued several heatwave alerts across more than half of the country, with maximum temperatures above 40°C in cities such as Seville, Córdoba and Palma. An increasingly extreme climate situation that, in 2022 alone, caused more than 4,700 deaths according to the Carlos III Health Institute, and which continues to raise the risk of workplace accidents related to prolonged heat exposure. Faced with this reality, Edison Next Spain, a company specializing in energy and environmental services, has reinforced its summer safety protocol with the acquisition and distribution of 251 new smart thermal monitoring wristbands. This preventive solution, which adds to those already deployed in previous years, is designed to protect workers who carry out their work outdoors. With a considerable investment in the acquisition of these wristbands, the company has prioritized their distribution in the municipalities with the highest temperature readings and greatest risk. In Seville and Palma de Mallorca alone, a total of 91 CANARIA+ devices have been distributed — a model developed by Biodata Bank for the early detection of heatstroke. In total, the new wristbands have been deployed across 15 locations throughout the country, forming an active protection network during the summer months. Wristbands such as the CANARIA+ continuously monitor internal body temperature and activate an audible alarm when risk thresholds are reached. Their use enables a rapid response to the first symptoms of heat stress, preventing complications and accelerating the response to potential incidents. Furthermore, the system includes a log that allows previous alerts to be analyzed, preventive planning to be improved and shifts to be adjusted in real time. The activation of this protocol, driven by Edison Next’s People and Talent department, is an effective response to companies’ obligations regarding prevention against extreme weather events. According to data collected by Edison Next Spain, the wristbands have already recorded around twenty real alerts during their use. “Taking care of our teams is not just a matter of prevention — it is a way of understanding the company culture we want to build,” say the People and Talent team at Edison Next Spain. “Especially in summer, we want each of our workers to feel that they are not alone in facing the heat, and that they can trust that the company is by their side to protect them.” In addition to the use of wristbands, the protocol includes frequent rest breaks, shift adjustments in the event of AEMET red or orange alerts, permanent access to water and hydration, and continuous monitoring of the situation by prevention managers. Increasingly, in more and more companies, these types of measures have ceased to be a one-off response and have become part of their active prevention policy, based on the ever more necessary protection of their human team.
