Pascual will achieve zero emissions at its dairy plants in 2026 with the help of Edison Next.

    • Pascual leads the dairy sector’s race towards decarbonization with renewable energy and circular economy projects at its facilities in Aranda de Duero and Gurb
    • Edison Next will undertake an investment of 20 million that will allow Pascual to launch energy efficiency initiatives, solutions for reducing thermal, electrical, and water consumption, and renewable technologies; in addition to the revaluation of organic waste and the application of the circular economy
    • Pascual was the first company in the dairy sector to obtain the greenhouse gas emission reduction seal granted since 2013 by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO)
Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the energy group EDISON and the French giant EDF, and Grupo Pascual, a Spanish food company in the mass consumption sector, have launched a Decarbonization Strategy with the aim of making the industrial complex in Aranda de Duero and the dairy plant in Gurb, both belonging to the food group, pioneers in achieving the Net Zero target by 2026. That is, cutting greenhouse gas emissions as close to zero as possible. Pascual has been developing an efficient production model for years that promotes the use of renewable energy, capable of responding to business needs with a lower environmental impact. In 2013, it became the first company in the dairy sector to obtain the “Calculate and Reduce” seal, granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). To achieve this milestone, Pascual has registered its carbon footprint for ten consecutive years with the Spanish Climate Change Office (OECC). With the signing of this alliance, Edison Next will undertake an investment of 20 million, which will enable the launch of various energy efficiency, circular economy, and renewable energy projects. These include solutions for reducing thermal, electrical, and water consumption, renewable technologies such as photovoltaic self-consumption, biomethane, or biomass. Likewise, a revaluation of organic waste and a pioneering application of the circular economy are planned, converting wastewater treatment plants into a biofactory for the recovery and use of biogenic CO2. In this way, the integration of the two wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) of the Aranda complex into a single, more efficient one is proposed. It will be equipped with the best technologies available on the market, allowing for increased biogas production, which, through an “upgrading” facility, will produce biomethane for injection into the grid, and bioCO2 to reduce the consumption of fossil-based chemicals. Similarly, a photovoltaic self-consumption installation is planned with an estimated electricity generation of around 3,000 MWhe/year, as well as a biomass initiative and a biomethane project with a thermal generation of around 10,000 MWht/year. In addition to launching a package of efficiency projects that will reduce electrical and thermal consumption by a combined 13%. Edison Next will also be the Delegate Subject that will assume the management of the Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs), which will allow Pascual to maximize this recently approved incentive mechanism, substantially improving the attractiveness of the proposed projects. All of this is expected to lead to a notable increase in productivity, digitalization, circularity, and efficiency of Pascual’s facilities in Aranda de Duero and Gurb, as well as a direct reduction in production costs, greater competitiveness, and a lower environmental impact, which will enable carbon neutrality to be achieved at the group’s plants. Edison Next and Pascual are committed to continuing to lead the industry towards a more sustainable and responsible future. In the words of Tomás Pascual, President of Pascual, “we have been working on our industrial area decarbonization strategy for almost 10 years. In this sense, the alliance with Edison Next is fundamental to maximize the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and from there, neutralize residual emissions to achieve the Net Zero target.” Journeying towards decarbonization since 2014 Both companies have been collaborating since 2014, with a continuous commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, demonstrating a firm responsibility towards environmental protection. Among the achievements reached between the Aranda de Duero and Gurb plants to date, notable are savings of six million in costs, a 30% reduction in energy consumption, and a decrease of 24,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Edison Next has played a fundamental role in Pascual’s decarbonization journey. In the words of Íñigo Bertrand, CEO of Edison Next Spain, he states that “the agreement with Grupo Pascual is an excellent testament to the synergy between two companies committed to environmental responsibility and operational excellence, and confirms that decarbonizing can be very profitable. Therefore, at Edison Next we are committed to accompanying Pascual in its energy transition towards the Net Zero target. And, with this shared vision, we will continue to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that drive Pascual’s competitiveness in its pursuit of excellence.” A whole series of energy projects that support Pascual’s commitment to sustainability and new renewable energy sources, and which are framed within an ambitious strategic decarbonization plan.
