When the future becomes the present, Spain covers all its demand with renewables and Edison Next adds green MW to the system.
Last April 16 became a historic day for our country’s energy transition. For the first time, Spain generated 100% of the peninsular energy demand with renewables. An event that definitively highlights our country’s potential to move towards a more sustainable energy model and that, at Edison Next, we celebrate with special enthusiasm. Not only for what it represents for the entire electrical system, but also because it reaffirms that the path we are taking alongside our clients is the right one.
That working Tuesday, Red Eléctrica reported that, between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, renewables supplied 100% of the peninsular electricity demand. In total, 559 GWh were generated from renewable sources: wind energy contributed 45.8%; solar photovoltaic, 27%; hydropower, 23.1%; solar thermal, renewable waste, and other renewables were responsible for generating the rest.
A few days later, on April 21, another record was broken. At 1:35 PM, the instantaneous production of solar photovoltaic energy reached 20,120 MW on the peninsula, 61.5% of the generation mix at that time, which represented 78.6% of the electricity demand.
At Edison Next, we do not experience these milestones as mere technical data, but rather as a clear sign that the energy transition is happening here and now, and we are proud to know that we are partly responsible for it. Our commitment to photovoltaic energy has been firm from the start, and for this reason, in recent years, we have accompanied dozens of companies, municipalities, and institutions in the installation and commissioning of solar self-consumption systems.
Thanks to our collaboration model, we help our clients not only to produce their own renewable energy, but also to optimize their consumption, reduce their energy bill, and minimize their environmental impact. Each photovoltaic installation we promote is another piece in that new energy system that, increasingly clearly, we see is becoming consolidated.
This milestone of April 16 also demonstrates that the electrical system is capable of integrating high percentages of renewable energy without compromising stability. An aspect we consider key to accelerating the electrification of industry, mobility, and other strategic sectors.
Despite these great news, at Edison Next, we believe there is no time to lose. Our photovoltaic solutions will continue to adapt to each client’s needs, integrating financing, maintenance, surplus management, or storage services when necessary. Our approach is and will remain comprehensive, with the clear goal of providing our clients with everything necessary for them to take the step towards cleaner and more affordable energy.
The accumulated experience in sectors such as the food industry, healthcare, or public administration has allowed us to develop technically robust,
economically viable solutions with a positive environmental impact. And we always do this with a proximity approach, accompanying the client in all phases of the project.
We know there is still a path ahead. But the fact that Spain has been able to cover its electricity demand with 100% renewables is an unmistakable sign that the future is already here. And at Edison Next, we are prepared to continue leading this transformation, adding green megawatts to the grid and accompanying our clients towards a more efficient, decarbonized, and resilient energy model.
