The new Sustainable Mobility Law, a great opportunity to accelerate decarbonization and urban efficiency.

The approval last week in Congress of the new Sustainable Mobility Law marks a turning point in Spain’s energy and urban transformation. This new regulatory framework, which promotes a cleaner and more efficient transport model, places mobility at the center of the ecological and digital transition.  The new law not only aims to reduce transport emissions, one of the sectors that contributes most to climate change, but also seeks to promote more balanced and resilient territorial development. It is truly a paradigm shift. Mobility is no longer understood solely as movement but becomes a strategic element of sustainability, competitiveness, and social well-being.  The law introduces new features that affect both the urban and business spheres. For example, it establishes the obligation for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to develop Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), with the aim of reducing emissions and promoting more efficient means of transport. It also promotes the electrification of public and private transport, the promotion of low-emission zones, and intermodality between different means of transport.  Furthermore, a National Sustainable Mobility System is created, with the purpose of improving planning and coordination between administrations, and strengthening and facilitating public-private cooperation. The law also includes more agile financing mechanisms and digital tools to optimize the management of fleets, infrastructure, and services. In the current context, where mobility represents almost 30% of CO₂ emissions in our country, this regulation becomes a necessary lever to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.  The transition towards low-carbon mobility undoubtedly opens up great opportunities for us, but it will also require planning, investment, and a shared vision among all stakeholders. The electrification of fleets, the installation of charging infrastructure, intelligent energy management, or the digitalization of services will be decisive factors in ensuring the competitiveness of companies and the sustainability of cities.  At this point, collaboration between the public and private sectors will also be essential. City councils, for example, will need technological and energy partners capable of supporting them in implementing solutions.  At Edison Next, we have been working for years to make the objectives pursued by this new law a reality. Our sustainable mobility, energy management, and digitalization solutions are already helping many municipalities and companies throughout Spain to reduce their consumption, improve their efficiency, and move towards decarbonization.  Through projects such as the installation of electric charging points, intelligent management of public lighting, or the certification of energy savings through Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs), we are accompanying our clients on their path towards a more sustainable mobility system.  The Sustainable Mobility Law is a roadmap that reminds us of the need to act today to guarantee our well-being tomorrow. At Edison Next, we advocate and know that the future of mobility not only can be electric but will necessarily also be efficient, digital, and collaborative.
