From commitment to results, Edison Next’s role in the success of the CAEs system in Spain

Almost two years ago, Spain took an important step in energy efficiency with the launch of the Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) system. This tool, since its creation, has allowed companies, organizations, and individuals to monetize the energy savings achieved and reinvest them in new sustainability projects.  Since its launch, the CAEs system has demonstrated rapid consolidation. In just two years, over 4.38 TWh of energy savings have been requested through 2,140 issuance requests encompassing 4,837 actions nationwide. The industrial sector has led adoption with 899 requests, followed by the residential sector with 649 and the tertiary sector with 477, confirming its broad reach and usefulness across different economic areas.  Furthermore, the average price obtained by savers ranges between €115 and €140/MWh, a range that reinforces the system’s economic appeal and its ability to incentivize new investments in energy efficiency. At Edison Next Spain, we have supported this mechanism from the outset, convinced of its potential to accelerate the energy transition and promote a low-carbon economy.  We were the first company designated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge as a Delegated Subject, placing us at the forefront of this new framework. Since then, we have accompanied companies and public institutions in the certification, verification, and monetization of their savings, helping to make CAEs one of the most effective levers for advancing the decarbonization of the Spanish productive fabric.  During this time, we have managed projects in sectors as diverse as heavy industry, hospitality, and public building renovation. Among the latest projects, we highlight our recent collaboration with Siderúrgica Balboa, where we managed to certify 10,517,851 CAEs for the savings obtained from their industrial energy efficiency project; our participation in the first public tender that incorporated CAEs for the renovation of municipal buildings; or the innovative integration of the system into sustainable mobility that we achieved together with Karos.  Throughout this journey, we have also wanted to be an active part of the dialogue and dissemination of the system. This very week, we participated alongside the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE) in the conference “Energy Savings Certificates: How to transform sustainability into a competitive advantage for companies?”, where we shared our experience and the opportunities this mechanism offers to Spanish companies.  There, our team highlighted the role of CAEs as a tool that unites sustainability, efficiency, and competitiveness, and that reinforces collaboration between the public and private sectors. Additionally, we distinguished it from other aid mechanisms due to its agile management and the elimination of endless administrative procedures.  At Edison Next, we have seen that the success of the CAEs system is due to its ability to transform sustainability into a tangible and measurable value. Thanks to this tool, companies not only reduce their consumption and emissions but also gain in efficiency, reputation, and competitiveness.  In just two years, the results speak for themselves. The interest and participation of companies have grown and continue to grow steadily, consolidating this system as one of the most effective initiatives in recent years to accelerate the energy transition in Spain.  From our position as a Delegated Subject, we will continue to promote new projects and collaborations that expand the reach of CAEs. Our goal is and will remain that every company, organization, or administration, regardless of its size or sector, can access a viable, profitable, and sustainable energy transition.
