Karos and Edison Next turn car sharing into certified energy savings with a direct impact on the user.

Car sharing has taken another step in transforming the urban mobility model in our country. Karos, a carpooling app for daily commutes, has partnered with Edison Next Spain, an energy and environmental services company, to integrate Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) for short shared trips, turning each journey into a direct benefit for the user and a measurable contribution to Spain’s energy transition. Karos, with the help of Edison Next Spain, has integrated CAEs into its fare system as a standard incentive, marking a turning point in the use of the CAE system and solidifying its applicability beyond sectors such as industrial or tertiary. Since last July, all shared trips over 10 kilometers within the national territory are eligible to receive CAEs. The benefits are distributed between drivers and passengers. Drivers receive an additional bonus of €0.30 per trip, while passengers enjoy the same amount as a direct discount on their ticket. The carpooling app itself is responsible for automatically tracking and verifying each trip, while Edison Next Spain handles certification, validation with MITECO, and monetization of the generated CAEs. The process is fully automated. The financial return goes directly to the driver’s digital wallet or as a discount for the passenger, without needing to carry out any additional management. This system, in addition to recognizing the individual effort of sharing a vehicle, manages to tangibly reward users, thus encouraging the adoption of a new long-term sustainable habit. Karos assures that “small, constant rewards are the key to generating lasting behavioral changes.” The incorporation of car sharing into the CAE system represents a major shift in the field of sustainable mobility. It also constitutes official recognition by the Government of the role of carpooling, a practice in which several people with a similar destination share the same vehicle for a trip. Edison Next Spain highlights the importance of continuing to explore new applications for CAEs: “This use case demonstrates how CAEs can become a useful tool to empower citizens, reduce emissions, and reinforce digital solutions that are already transforming our cities.” With this model, a new avenue opens for obligated parties and other actors in the energy ecosystem to actively contribute to the country’s energy transition, while strengthening an urban mobility solution that is already proving its ability to reduce costs, emissions, and congestion.
