ArcelorMittal trusts Edison Next for steam supply at its Avilés plant

Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and French giant EDF, and ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining producer, today inaugurated the three steam boilers and the water treatment plant installed at one of the steel multinational’s industrial plants in northern Spain, specifically at the Avilés factory. The project’s main objective is to optimize ArcelorMittal’s production process with a focus on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The investment will serve to improve internal energy generation, reduce emissions and waste, and ensure a reliable steam supply for its industrial operations. Each of the three installed boilers has the capacity to produce 24 net tons of steam per hour, a considerable generation capacity, making them suitable for industrial applications requiring a high demand for thermal energy, as is the case here. Additionally, their high energy efficiency will reduce fuel consumption by using steelmaking gases for their operation. With the aim of continuing its strategy to improve energy efficiency and self-sufficiency, the steel multinational has been developing similar projects in northern Spain for years. For example, in 2018, Edison Next also carried out a very similar initiative to install boilers and water treatment plants for the Coke Ovens at the Gijón factory. Given the good experience of that project and the positive impression of its quality and performance, ArcelorMittal has continued to rely on Edison Next to develop new actions. “Initiatives like this represent a clear commitment to efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, this will translate into an economic improvement for ArcelorMittal thanks to the optimization of fuel consumption, reduction of operating costs, and regulatory compliance,” explained Juan Carlos Sanjorge, Northwest Area Regional Manager BU Industry at Edison Next. Edison Next supports ArcelorMittal’s sustainability strategy through a series of energy projects to continue moving towards an increasingly environmentally responsible sector.
