Edison Next completes the commissioning of the new efficient lighting for the Palma de Mallorca Cathedral.

Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, has just completed the maintenance and renovation project for the exterior lighting of the Mallorca Cathedral. This lighting plan, which began to be designed in 2015, has involved an investment of 2.23 million euros, of which 1.3 million were contributed by the Palma City Council, and the remainder came from funds for the improvement of the maintenance and conservation contract for Palma’s exterior lighting. With this initiative, the old lighting system has been replaced with an efficient LED technology system, which will result in a 40% reduction in energy consumption. Specifically, the energy specialist has replaced the 183 projectors that previously illuminated the Cathedral with 505 projectors, designed for facade lighting, in different locations. Furthermore, of the total projectors, 298 are embedded in the pavement surrounding the Cathedral and the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, while 207 have been placed on terraces, patios, flying buttresses, roofs, and on the walls of Ses Voltes and Dalt Murada. And, despite the increase in the number of light points compared to the previous lighting, the installed power has gone from 87 to 52 kilowatts without affecting the visual experience, since the new projectors can generate lighting that will reproduce the original color of the stone with greater fidelity and enhance the architectural elements of the 13th-century Gothic cathedral. In this way, the Palma City Council improves the energy management of the Cathedral’s lighting, enhancing energy efficiency and ensuring considerable energy savings. “Our firm commitment to efficiency has allowed us to be the company in charge of the renovation and maintenance of the lighting of the Palma de Mallorca Cathedral. Beyond the lighting renovation, this project represents a firm commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change,” explains Daniel Bennasar, Head of Operations B.U. Public at Edison Next.  This project aligns with the energy renovation measures set internationally and recently endorsed by the European Parliament with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality. According to recent data, buildings in the European Union are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard, updating public lighting to LED systems is undoubtedly a measure that more and more European cities will implement, mainly due to the great potential for long-term savings and the positive environmental impact that this change brings. Energy projects like the lighting renovation at the Palma de Mallorca Cathedral are examples of how innovation and sustainability can come together to preserve historical and cultural heritage; reducing both the carbon footprint and energy consumption, and allowing cities to move towards a more efficient and sustainable future. “We believe that this initiative can serve as an example to bet on energy solutions that continue to preserve our cultural heritage while moving towards a more sustainable future,” concludes Alejandro Asensi, Agency Manager B.U. Public at Edison Next.
