Edison Next equips its workers with smart thermal monitoring bracelets to prevent heatstroke.

Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, has activated an action protocol among its employees as a result of episodes of extreme temperatures recorded in the country, which have forced the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) to report up to three heatwaves so far this summer. In response to these episodes of extreme heat, the company has provided its workers with smart bracelets for continuous monitoring of body temperature to prevent heatstroke. Placed on the wrist, it is activated by its single side button and, once activated, the bracelet constantly measures the heat accumulated inside the body and activates an audible alarm in case of risk of heatstroke. This preventive measure, activated during the past month of July and promoted by the People and Talent area of Edison Next, has benefited a total of 225 people, including maintenance and works personnel, as well as civil works staff. Furthermore, according to the multinational, this protocol will involve continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of the measures, as well as maintaining a record of accidents and warnings received. So far, they report having received around twenty activations from the bracelets due to heatstroke alerts, which, after a break in activity, the professionals have been able to resume normally. A project developed under the guidelines established by Royal Decree 4/2023, which sets out occupational risk prevention measures aimed at avoiding, minimizing, and controlling the risks associated with exposure to adverse climatic factors. In the words of Albert Puig, Health & Safety Manager BU Public at Edison Next, “with the aim of promoting the highest standards of well-being among our employees, we have implemented this activation protocol for episodes of extreme temperatures. A necessary preventive measure in the face of continuous heatwaves, benefiting all those who, due to their activity, must carry out work outdoors or in workplaces that cannot be closed”.  “Furthermore, to determine heat levels, the heads of each delegation will receive daily alerts issued by AEMET via a mobile application. When an orange or red warning is issued, measures such as reducing or modifying the planned workday will also be adopted,” explains Albert Puig. However, episodes of high ambient temperatures in Spain have led the MoMo index, prepared by the National Center for Epidemiology of the Carlos III Health Institute, to record a total of 4,744 deaths during the summer of 2022. With these figures on the table, Edison Next has sought to lead a strategy based on an action plan and training for its employees in occupational risk prevention. “Safety in the industry is a key priority for Edison Next. Therefore, the company develops and evaluates safety measures appropriate to all work phases. As a result, we guarantee a healthy work environment for all professionals. At the same time, we foster a culture of prevention and continuous collaboration aimed at identifying risks and improving occupational safety,” states Puig.
