Edison Next improves Pascual’s energy efficiency by 35% in the last five years.

The accumulated savings at its Barcelona plant have already exceeded the 1.8 million euro investment made. Pascual has entrusted EDF Fenice with the energy management of its production plant, located in the town of Gurb (Barcelona), as one of the 26 efficiency projects that both companies have carried out since 2015. Thanks to this, the Spanish company, specialized in the preparation and packaging of milk and other derived products, has managed to improve the key performance indicators (KPIs) of its electrical, thermal, and water vectors by up to 35% over the last five years, after making a total investment of 1.8 million euros, a figure widely offset by the energy consumption savings achieved during this time. The improvements introduced by EDF Fenice have also brought significant gains in productivity and efficiency for the company’s facilities in Spain, with a direct reduction in production costs and a lower environmental impact, both in its water footprint and its carbon footprint. This initiative joins 16 other energy efficiency projects that EDF Fenice has carried out for Pascual at its factory in Aranda de Duero (Burgos). At the Gurb plant, both companies have launched a new energy management platform that allows real-time analysis of the efficiency of all energy vectors, with permanent monitoring of its main performance indicators and constant monitoring of all facilities, as well as energy-intensive production processes. EDF Fenice’s technology facilitates immediate decision-making, based on data that is permanently controlled for management and correction, both in energy facilities and on the main production lines, avoiding possible inefficiencies during non-productive periods. As explained by Juan Carlos Lopez, Head of the Engineering and Technical Office Department at Pascual, “this project is part of a modernization plan for the energy vectors of our plants, which has involved a gradual investment since 2015 and has generated economic savings greater than the investments made, based on improving the efficiency of all the energy vectors we use: electrical, thermal, and water,” he emphasizes. Specifically, the executive refers to a reduction in water consumption of more than 60,000 m3/year and a reduction in atmospheric emissions of 7,659 tons of CO2 per year, compared to 2015 values, resulting from the progressive modernization of energy facilities and supply security, increased availability, as well as continuous efficiency improvement, which ultimately leads to a reduction in production costs. Continuous monitoring of the facilities has also made it possible to discover the factory’s demand patterns, which, together with the machine learning algorithms used, have provided a more accurate prediction of electricity and fuel demand, achieving a reduction in the power contracted by the client. EDF Fenice, a subsidiary of EDF specialized in Energy Efficiency and Photovoltaic Self-consumption solutions and services for the business sector, has carried out all the energy efficiency projects implemented by Pascual at its production center located in the town of Gurb. Likewise, it operates all energy assets (boilers, compressed air, refrigeration, industrial cooling, raw water and wastewater treatment) and maintenance tasks, with a team of six specialists. As also explained by the Head of Operations & Supply Chain at Pascual, Roberto Zapata, “EDF Fenice has the specialized knowledge, experience, and professionalism necessary to propose solutions and improvements that increase our energy efficiency, as well as a long track record in implementing this type of project, with its own methodology that ensures the achievement of the expected results.” Regarding its upcoming plans, Pascual is addressing other energy efficiency projects, together with EDF Fenice, among which a Photovoltaic Self-consumption installation stands out. Regarding this relationship, Diego Fraile, Director of Technological Innovation and EMS at EDF Fenice, highlights “the excellent results of the collaboration based on our energy management platform, which is capable of offering real-time visibility of all the energy vectors of the installation, as well as its evolution and permanent improvement. This global vision is essential to achieve significant efficiencies, which translate into a drastic reduction in production costs, as well as a lower environmental impact. The introduction of this platform also in the milk production process is already allowing Pascual to select the most efficient lines, depending on the type of reference and the production rate,” he concludes.
