Energy transition: cross-cutting trend for 2023

The business sector, public administrations, and even end users themselves increasingly need to find new paths to address the energy transition. Therefore, throughout this year, the focus has been on implementing technological advances to increase the penetration of renewable and clean energy, as well as monitoring energy data for optimization. With 2022 coming to an end, most organizations are still not aiming for a 100% transition, according to recent reports. Although companies’ levels of energy transition may differ, their sourcing tactics tend to be a mix of different available options. In light of this, Edison Next identifies the energy trends and sustainability drivers that will mark the upcoming 2023. In this sense, energy efficiency, smart lighting, renewable energies, and carbon capture would be the main energy trends highlighted by the company. For the business sector, there are two key driving technologies. On one hand, energy efficiency, where by measuring data and changing consumption habits, energy consumption can be significantly reduced. And on the other hand, investment in generation systems based on renewable energies, where photovoltaic self-consumption is the most mature technology. And if something has become clear this year 2022, it is that the trend we have been seeing in recent times regarding solar energy is consolidating; due to a greater awareness that renewable energies, and specifically solar, are the future. Likewise, in terms of sustainability in cities and building complexes, Edison Next highlights the implementation of smart lighting, as well as sensorization systems, which allow visualizing energy consumption and analyzing data through Big Data; enabling economic and energy savings. The company also highlights the boost that CO2 capture, use, and storage projects will have during 2023 to address the energy transition and combat global warming. Undoubtedly, from a sustainability perspective, the cross-cutting trend for 2023 is a commitment to the energy transition in the economic fabric, public administrations, cities, and society as a whole to achieve the decarbonization goals set by Europe. To this end, it is essential to opt, as far as possible, for more sustainable, green, and clean energy resources that contribute to a green future.
