El Pozo again entrusts Edison Next with the comprehensive management of its cogeneration plant.

El Pozo, a food company within the Grupo Fuerte, has decided to continue working alongside Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, to improve the efficiency of its facilities in Alhama de Murcia. Since Edison Next began managing the cogeneration plant nearly three years ago, it has maximized both its effectiveness and energy production. Built in 2013, the plant operates under a self-consumption model, simultaneously generating electrical energy and useful thermal energy from natural gas. This cogeneration has allowed the food company to achieve high levels of energy savings. The collaboration agreement signed between both companies covered two fundamental aspects: an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) model for four MWM brand natural gas engines (4.3 kW each) with an exhaust gas recovery boiler, and a comprehensive management approach, initially lasting one year and subject to annual renewal. It also included the creation of a team of 5 people to oversee the continuous proper operation of the facilities. Edison Next’s experience has been key to the project’s success. During the past year 2023, the cogeneration plant operated for 3,870 hours, generating a total of 91.3 GWh of energy, including electricity, steam, and hot water. These results have not only improved the energy efficiency of the facilities but have also boosted the economic profitability of the investment El Pozo made in the cogeneration plant. Since Edison Next began managing the plant, a total of 247.5 GWh of electricity has been generated, which the El Pozo facilities have used for their energy self-consumption. This amount of generated energy is equivalent to the load needed to power 83,000 electric cars, or the electricity consumption of the entire metropolitan area of Madrid for four days. Likewise, energy savings of 94 GWh have been achieved, resulting in significant economic savings for the food company. The project has stood out especially for its notable positive impact on the environment. It is estimated that, thanks to its implementation, the emission of approximately 14,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere has been avoided. This achievement, equivalent to the beneficial effect of planting more than 84,000 trees, represents a significant reduction in the carbon footprint, which will undoubtedly contribute to mitigating climate change and preserving the area’s natural resources. “We observe with satisfaction the growing commitment of the private sector to sustainability and responsible management of energy resources.
