Well-being in nursing homes driven by Edison Next’s BMS systems

The implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS) is increasingly gaining prominence as a key solution for improving building efficiency and comfort. In environments where comfort and safety are especially valuable, a BMS allows for the efficient management of various aspects of building operations, such as HVAC, lighting, ventilation, and security. As a result, this type of technology, in addition to offering great benefits such as reducing energy costs and improving the sustainability of facilities, also contributes to creating a healthier and more comfortable environment. According to the census conducted by IMSERSO, and recently published by the Ministry of Social Rights, there are more than 5,188 nursing homes for the elderly in Spain, representing 76% of the 6,831 residential centers available in the country. These facilities offer 381,514 places for one of the most vulnerable populations in our country: elderly people admitted to residential centers, who, according to the census, are mostly over 80 years old. In this context, Building Management Systems (BMS) have become key tools for ensuring a suitable environment in these geriatric residences. These systems allow real-time monitoring of critical factors such as temperature, air quality, or lighting, automatically adjusting parameters to maintain optimal conditions consistently. Their great capacity and flexibility to integrate different devices and technologies are helping to create a safer, healthier environment adapted to the specific needs of this population segment. In a geriatric residence, this means being able to ensure that residents, many of whom are people with specific health needs, enjoy a safe and suitable environment for their well-being. Furthermore, thanks to the automation aspect of these solutions, residence staff, by not having to worry about the technical management of the building, can focus on providing more personalized care to the elderly. In parallel, another major benefit of implementing a BMS in geriatric residences is the improvement of energy efficiency. These systems allow for reduced energy consumption by optimizing the use of resources such as heating and lighting, adapting them to the specific needs of each area of the residence. For example, in areas that do not require as much HVAC or light at certain times of the day, the system can automatically adjust these factors, resulting in lower energy expenditure and, consequently, a considerable reduction in operating costs—a particularly critical factor for the 75% of residences that are privately owned and need to maximize their profitability. Additionally, the implementation of this solution in geriatric residences can have a direct impact on the emotional well-being of residents. Elderly people are especially sensitive to changes in their environment, and efficient control of HVAC, lighting, and noise can make a significant difference in their quality of life. Maintaining an adequate temperature throughout all seasons, ensuring sufficient but not excessive lighting, and guaranteeing an environment without unnecessary noise helps residents feel more comfortable and relaxed. Edison Next has established itself as a benchmark in the implementation of BMS in sectors where efficiency and comfort are fundamental, such as hospitals or geriatric residences. With its experience in advanced energy solutions, Edison Next offers a range of services that integrate the most advanced technology.
