Small municipalities, big changes: Edison Next illuminates the future of Lles de Cerdanya
In a privileged natural environment like that of Lles de Cerdanya, in the heart of the Pyrenees, environmental protection is not just a commitment; it is a shared necessity for institutions, businesses, and citizens. For this reason, the Lles de Cerdanya City Council has decided to take the definitive step towards sustainability and award Edison Next the execution of the public lighting renovation project in the towns of Lles and Viliella.
The new project, which involves replacing the old sodium vapor lamps with state-of-the-art LED technology, in addition to a technical renovation, represents a significant change in the management of the municipality’s streets. Thanks to this action, the municipal energy bill will be notably reduced, greenhouse gas emissions will be cut, and the quality of the night sky—one of the area’s great attractions—will be improved.
With this award, at Edison Next we aim to accompany Lles de Cerdanya on its path towards sustainability. In previous years, the municipality had already promoted improvements in various points of its lighting network, but thanks to this action, they will complete their journey of modernization and transition to LED technology, one of the most efficient and sustainable on the market.
This project will benefit from grants from the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia, which finances up to 50% of the total cost of projects aimed at improving the environmental surroundings and actively contributing to the fight against climate change during the 2023-2025 period.
The choice of LED technology to replace the old vapor lamps responds to efficiency criteria, but sustainability and citizen well-being will also benefit. This technology, in addition to allowing an energy consumption reduction of up to 80%, has a much longer lifespan and therefore notably reduces technical problems and requires fewer maintenance interventions.
On the other hand, in places like Lles de Cerdanya, where the night sky is an environmental, tourist, and cultural asset, this type of solution takes on even greater value. To maximize benefits, the luminaires in this project have been designed to emit the right amount of light, in the appropriate direction, and with the most pleasant tone possible. Reducing light pollution will protect nocturnal biodiversity and improve the experience for residents and visitors.
For Edison Next, this project is another example of the commitment we adopt to energy efficiency and sustainability at all levels of the territory. We argue that small municipalities are also protagonists of the energy transition, and their momentum is essential. That is why we are proud to accompany the Lles de Cerdanya City Council in an initiative that connects the local with the global, the everyday with the innovative, and technology with respect for the natural environment.
Our experience in renovating public lighting in rural and natural areas has allowed us to offer the municipality a tailored, responsible solution aligned with the highest technical and environmental standards. At Edison Next, we will continue working so that other municipalities can also move towards a more modern and efficient energy model because, for us, every luminaire that is modernized and every watt that is saved is one more step towards the future we want, and must, build together.
