Edison Next agrees to purchase CAES from Siderúrgica Balboa, the first company in Extremadura to obtain Energy Savings Certificates.

Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, has successfully completed the management of Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) for Siderúrgica Balboa, part of CL Grupo Industrial, which has become the first company in Extremadura to receive an Energy Savings Certificate. The heat recovery project led by Balboa, and certified by Edison Next, has enabled the plant to achieve significant energy savings of 10.5 million kWh per year. This saving has resulted in the issuance of 10,517,851 Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs), exceeding initial expectations by 10% and consolidating the steel plant as a pioneer in adopting energy efficiency measures in Extremadura. With an investment of 350,000 euros, this initiative has focused on installing a heat recuperator at the exit of the rolling mill at the Siderúrgica Balboa plant, located in Jerez de los Caballeros, Extremadura. This new technology allows the recovery of waste heat from the process, using that heat to preheat the air used in thermal processes. As a result, the company has optimized its energy consumption, avoiding the emission of 2,124 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere, thereby reinforcing its commitment to the sustainability of its environment. The management of the CAEs by Edison Next has helped make the return on investment period for Balboa much shorter than expected. First, the energy company was responsible for justifying the energy savings using the international IPMVP protocol, which defined a baseline to measure prior energy consumption and accurately calculate the savings achieved. Next, Edison Next coordinated the verification process with the accredited entity EQA, ensuring the accuracy of the results before proceeding with the request for issuance of the CAEs and their subsequent registration with the regional manager and the National Coordinator of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Finally, the monetization of these CAEs through their sale to an Obligated Party has allowed Siderúrgica Balboa to recover a large part of the investment allocated to this initiative. Indeed, the CAE system, introduced by Royal Decree 36/2023, is becoming an effective tool for promoting energy efficiency in the Spanish business landscape. These certificates, issued after verification of the energy savings achieved, are enabling many companies to carry out projects that, without the recovery of part of the investment and the improved profitability offered by this system, they would not be able to undertake. “Our goal has always been to empower companies to implement energy efficiency projects that might otherwise be unfeasible due to the high initial investment,” explains Jon Macías, commercial director of Edison Next, “We hope that through more initiatives like this, we can not only reduce companies’ carbon footprint but also foster an environment of innovation and competitiveness in the Spanish industrial sector.” For Edison Next, managing CAEs is a fundamental step in its commitment to helping companies achieve their sustainability goals. Thanks to its prior experience in managing these certificates in countries like France and Italy, where this system has been in place for years, Edison Next has become a strategic partner for companies seeking to maximize the benefits of their investments in sustainability and energy efficiency. “We decided to become a Delegated Entity of the Energy Savings Certificate system because we firmly believe in the transformative potential these certificates offer to the Spanish business landscape. Let us leverage these certificates to gain industrial competitiveness and generate wealth and quality jobs in the environment,” assures Jon Macías, commercial director of Edison Next Spain, “Thanks to our experience in managing CAEs in other countries, we were convinced that we would facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable and efficient economy in Spain.”
