Coren trusts Edison Next to continue improving its energy efficiency through a trigeneration project.
In an effort to continue advancing towards energy sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint, Coren, the leading Spanish cooperative in the food industry sector, decided to trust Edison Next to carry out a Trigeneration project.
Through this project, the Poultry Processing Center that Coren has in Ourense has achieved an energy generation system that produces three useful forms of energy simultaneously: electricity, heat, and cold. By harnessing the thermal by-products of electricity generation to produce heat and cold, it has significantly improved the system’s energy efficiency compared to traditional electricity generation, where residual heat is wasted.
Specifically, this project has been based on the use of multiple energy vectors including LV/HV electricity, generation, steam heat, and cogeneration heat (hot water). Additionally, Edison Next is handling the operation and maintenance of a 5 MW Rolls Royce gas engine, with a Cerney exhaust gas recovery boiler.
During the course of 2021, the trigeneration system operated for a total of 8,347 hours, highlighting its exceptional availability and reliability. This high operating rate allowed the system to generate an impressive 30,556,130 kWh during the same period, evidencing its effectiveness and important contribution to the energy supply of Coren’s Poultry Processing Center.
These systems are highly efficient and sustainable, as they make the most of available energy resources and reduce carbon emissions by minimizing the need to burn additional fossil fuels for heat and cold production. Furthermore, we considered that this solution was especially beneficial for Coren, since trigeneration increases its usefulness in industrial facilities where both heat and cold are required.
Since Coren became our client in 2010, we have provided them with a wide range of specialized services to meet their energy and asset management needs. This includes energy and own asset management, comprehensive project management, operations and maintenance (O&M) of cogeneration systems (CHPs), as well as energy efficiency proposals and savings monitoring.
Thanks to our collaboration, Coren has experienced a notable benefit in terms of operational optimization, cost reduction, and sustainability improvement, thus strengthening its position as a leader in the Spanish food sector, and also becoming a benchmark in the environmental field.
