Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, has announced that promoting sustainable mobility in Spain will be one of its main priorities in the coming years. With this goal in mind, the company will focus on expanding the network of electric vehicle charging points in Spain, thus responding to the growing demand from drivers of this type of vehicle.
A commitment to facilitating the transition towards a greener future and promoting sustainable mobility in Spain, with which Edison Next reaffirms its commitment to becoming one of the main operators of charging points in the country. And, given the need to expand the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, it is estimated that by 2030, around 340,000 public access charging points and 30,000,000 in private spaces will be required.
The electric vehicle market in Spain has experienced notable growth in recent years, driven by the need to address the environmental crisis and adopt more sustainable mobility systems. At this point, registrations of new BEV (100% electric) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid) vehicles have increased at an annual rate of 45.5% since 2018, thanks to the growing accessibility of sustainable vehicles.
Moreover, according to recent data from the EU Alternative Fuels Observatory, 11.5% of new registrations in Spain during 2023 were electric vehicles, and this percentage is expected to rise to 72% by 2030. The new National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) has set the goal of reaching 5,450,000 electric vehicles in Spain by that same year.
To achieve this ambitious goal, it is crucial that the electric vehicle charging infrastructure undergoes parallel development. Edison Next is committed to playing a fundamental role in this regard, working to implement an accessible and efficient network of charging points throughout the Spanish territory.
“At Edison Next, we have recognized the need and urgency for a robust network of electric vehicle charging points that allows us to meet these ambitious objectives. Therefore, from the company, we will work to bring an accessible and efficient network to Spain, thus facilitating the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future,” says Íñigo Bertrand from Edison Next.
Currently, Spain has more than 28,000 charging points, of which only about 5,000 are fast charging, and the majority are located in urban areas or destination points. However, given the projection of growing demand, an expansion of the charging infrastructure will be required in the coming years.
To this end, the company will be responsible for the investment, ownership, and management of public and private charging points throughout the Spanish territory, leveraging its strong market position and its technical, financial, and commercial capabilities to contribute to the advancement of sustainable mobility in Spain.
