Edison Next develops Spain’s largest photovoltaic self-consumption plant with optimizers for Kimberly-Clark in Salamanca.

Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the EDISON energy group and the French giant EDF, has begun developing the largest photovoltaic PPA with optimizers in Spain. The project is being executed at the production facilities in Salamanca of the American company Kimberly-Clark, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of hygiene products and owner of household brands such as Scottex®, Kleenex®, and Huggies®. Once the project is completed, the Salamanca facility will have an installed capacity of over 4.9 MW, enabling an annual energy production of 6,500 MWh. Thanks to the clean energy produced at these facilities, the company will avoid the emission of 1,759 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year, which is equivalent to supplying 1,985 homes in Spain according to Red Eléctrica Española (REE). With the priority of ensuring maximum safety, Edison Next has taken specific measures in the design of the rooftop plant. Aware of the importance of preventing fires and their potential impact, a proactive approach has been adopted to mitigate any risk situation. This effort has resulted in the design of the most fire-resistant rooftop plant in the world. This initiative not only represents a milestone in safety and risk prevention but also demonstrates Edison Next’s unwavering commitment to excellence and the protection of the environment where it operates. As a result, the photovoltaic installation has the highest fire protection available on the market for prevention, ignition, and potential subsequent spread. It is installing one of the few solar panels in the world with dual A-A certification, the highest fire protection certification in the world. Furthermore, Edison Next has used state-of-the-art technology for the installation of the photovoltaic plant, both in terms of solar panels and auxiliary components, and will be responsible for its implementation and maintenance. Oriol Margó, Sustainability Leader at Kimberly-Clark EMEA, states: “This ambitious project, carried out in partnership with Edison Next, will greatly contribute to helping us meet our 2030 goal of reducing total emissions by 50% compared to 2015. This alliance is one of Kimberly-Clark’s ongoing sustainability projects to facilitate the deployment of renewable electricity in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and the continuous exploration and development of decarbonization solutions.” Edison Next Spain’s commitment to sustainability and new renewable energy sources is part of its sustainable strategy to become a European specialist in energy solutions, already consolidating itself as one of the most competitive, innovative, and committed companies to sustainability and the environment within the Spanish energy market. In this way, the energy specialist aims to drive a more sustainable future, working day by day with the public and private sectors to make its renewable energy solutions accessible to everyone, as well as contributing to the fight against climate change. “Ambitious projects with great social value, like the one with Kimberly-Clark, are what encourage us to continue working every day on the transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy model. Furthermore, we believe that adopting renewable energy technologies, in addition to energy efficiency, to achieve decarbonization are key to reaching this goal, and we are dedicating our efforts to supporting innovative projects in this field,” said Manuel Barrera, Manager of Solar Photovoltaic Energy and Sales Manager for the Southern Area of Edison Next.
