Savings, energy efficiency, and reduction of light pollution are crucial objectives for the economy and environmental sustainability. Public lighting in Spain accounts for an electricity consumption of approximately 2900 GWh/year, according to the latest data from the Spanish Lighting Committee. This figure represents 1.8% of the total national electricity consumption and is therefore responsible for the emission of around 1,740,000 tons of CO2/year into the atmosphere.
At this point, public lighting installations must comply with the principles of energy efficiency. All of this is aimed at meeting the European sustainability goals set for 2030.
Our Public Sector division supports its clients in their sustainable, low-carbon, and connected projects related to public lighting. To this end, we put our expertise at the disposal of administrations to help cities in their energy efficiency and development.
An example of this is the maintenance and conservation contract for the southern area of Seville, carried out by our Public Sector division, managing 38,000 lighting points and 725 control centers. Within this contract, the City Council plans to progressively increase the number of LED luminaires, thus contributing to the reduction of emissions and considerable energy savings, which could be approximately 55% with the LED changes made to date. A project aimed at contributing to the fight against climate change.
With the same objective, our Seville office has a fleet of sustainable vehicles with 0 and ECO labels. The contract also includes the development and maintenance of an integrated management application for the provision of the public lighting conservation service, adapted to the geographic information system of the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and with direct communication to the city’s incident platform.
Furthermore, it includes the improvement of active and reactive energy management systems, to ensure that public lighting electrical installations operate with the highest possible efficiency, by monitoring and analyzing consumption, and proposing savings measures.
Different Spanish cities are already taking the first step towards sustainability by remodeling their public lighting through projects that seek efficiency, savings, and reduced consumption; in addition to launching energy communities and installing charging points. A whole series of pieces that make up the puzzle needed to address sustainability and the future of cities.
