The installation is expected to produce the equivalent of planting more than 1,463 trees and prevent the emission of more than 443 tons of CO2 per year Edison Next, an energy services company and subsidiary of the leading Italian energy group EDISON, has agreed with Plastipak, a global leader in the packaging and packaging recycling industries, to implement a photovoltaic self-consumption project. The installation, with an installed capacity of 1 MWp, will be located at Plastipak’s new bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Toledo. The project, which will be built on the roof of the recycling plant, will house 1,800 photovoltaic modules that will generate more than 1,349.56 MWh of clean energy per year. Built with the most advanced technology, both in terms of solar panels and auxiliary components, Edison Next will also provide a management system to monitor both the energy generated and consumed at the plant. This photovoltaic project is expected to generate 1,339.44 MWh of energy per year, which will be entirely consumed on site. The energy produced by this new installation will be equivalent to planting more than 1,463 trees and will prevent the emission of more than 443 tons of CO2 per year. “The development of this photovoltaic plant on the roof of Plastipak’s PET packaging recycling plant in Toledo will bring significant benefits. EDISON Next will manage the installation comprehensively, from design, specification, monitoring, and commissioning to the execution of preventive maintenance services, including continuous improvements to the installation,” explains Jon Macías from Edison Next Spain. “This is a clear commitment to the efficiency of Plastipak’s new recycling plant, as well as to sustainability and the environment,” he concludes. With innovation as a key driver, Plastipak has more than 40 facilities located in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Founded in 1967, the company offers rigid plastic packaging solutions with a firm commitment to reducing its impact on the environment. Pedro Martins, Managing Director for Europe at Plastipak, states that “Plastipak is an industry leader in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, with a public commitment to SBTi for science-based emission reduction targets. We have already achieved 100% energy use from renewable sources in Europe, and this latest project is a key step in our plan to implement on-site renewable energy generation where needed, as part of a balanced and sustainable long-term energy management strategy.” John Schrek, Global Energy Manager at Plastipak, adds that “the Toledo photovoltaic project represents another milestone on Plastipak’s path towards a more robust renewable and sustainable future.”
