The role of BMS in decarbonization

Humanity faces an unprecedented challenge in history: climate change and the environmental emergency. In this complex scenario, human activity stands as one of the main causes of the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, something that tops the lists of actions on which countries must work together to find solutions. In Europe, efforts have been underway for years to solve this problem, establishing a joint and highly ambitious strategy that envisions a decarbonized economy as a fundamental measure to reduce environmental impact, cutting carbon emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, to develop a more sustainable economy and ensure the future of our planet. Spain, which is part of this strategy, has a long-term Decarbonization initiative that charts the path to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. This means we must stop relying on fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, and instead use renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower. The transition to a decarbonized economy is not only necessary to protect our planet and the environment, but it also represents an opportunity for innovation, job creation, and sustainable economic growth. However, this transition will not be easy or quick and will require unprecedented collective action and international collaboration. To facilitate this process, IoT control and analytics solutions based on tools such as BMS (Building Management Systems), which improve the management and control of both public and private buildings by obtaining precise consumption data and enabling facility control, help enhance the energy efficiency of installations. Furthermore, through proactive maintenance systems (BMSlytics®), the foundation of these solutions, it is possible to achieve optimal building performance and excellence in their operation and maintenance. Likewise, through Data Science for BMS maintenance, special attention is paid to cybersecurity, ensuring full system coverage by verifying physical magnitude sensors, consumption totalizers, actuator operation, and parameters of the Niagara system’s performance. This tool promotes proactive maintenance, reducing costs and time. On the other hand, Smart-Retrocommissioning enables the auditing and balancing of HVAC and control installations in operating buildings. Through point analysis to improve performance, it allows for enhanced energy efficiency.   Ultimately, having the right solutions will be crucial for companies that decide to efficiently embark on the path to decarbonization. These solutions allow for setting realistic goals based on each entity’s capabilities, as well as monitoring progress and automating processes to make energy resources and production processes more efficient.
