AI and sustainability: how can artificial intelligence be the solution to its own energy problem?

Artificial intelligence is transforming both our daily lives and an increasing number of industries, but its rise raises a new and significant concern. The development of this technology is leading to higher energy consumption and increased greenhouse gas emissions. For example, Microsoft has recorded a 30% increase in its CO2 emissions since 2020, mainly due to the expansion of its data centers, reflecting how the intensive use of AI boosts energy demand.  The situation could become alarming if we consider the massive consumption of resources this entails. A single Chat GPT response consumes approximately ten times more energy than a Google search, and with 100 million weekly users, the energy required only continues to increase. Furthermore, new advanced models, such as GPT-4, will consume up to 50 times more electricity than their predecessors.  However, AI is not only part of the problem but also has the potential to become a very important part of the solution. At Edison Next Spain, we have been working for some time to integrate sustainable solutions that address climate challenges, helping our clients optimize their resource use through technological innovation. To this end, we do not hesitate to leverage the advantages that technologies like AI can offer us in improving aspects such as energy efficiency or the optimization of production processes.  The growing pressure on global electricity grids, exacerbated by AI and other energy demands, forces us to adopt new approaches. This is why AI is playing a crucial role in integrating renewable energies into the electricity grid, helping to better manage the variability of renewable production and promoting both system stability and efficiency. Through the analysis of weather patterns and consumption trends, AI can forecast peaks in energy production, allowing demand to be adjusted and waste to be minimized.  Despite these advances, the key will be finding a balance between the economic and social benefits that AI brings and its energy expenditure. Several reports suggest that, if well applied, AI has the potential to mitigate between 5% and 10% of global GHG emissions by 2030. However, achieving this will require a collaborative approach, such as the one promoted by the World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Alliance, to ensure that technological solutions ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future.  At Edison Next Spain, our vision remains to lead the energy transition by driving innovative solutions that integrate sustainability and advanced technologies.
