For years, many companies' energy strategies have relied on a single solution, such as a more efficient boiler, a photovoltaic installation, or an upgraded HVAC system. However, the current energy context has completely changed. Factors such as price volatility,...
The electrical system is undergoing a phase of transformation in which the role of the consumer is changing. The growing penetration of renewable energies, together with a more volatile price scenario, has positioned flexibility as an essential element to guarantee...
Edison Next Spain promotes a sustainable future at the IV Self-Consumption Congress.
Edison Next Spain was a sponsor of the 4th Self-Consumption Congress, organized by the Spanish Renewable Energy Association (APPA), held at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. This highly relevant event for the energy sector brought together prominent leaders and experts in the search for sustainable solutions for a cleaner and more efficient future.
The Congress was attended by the Secretary of State for Energy of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen; who, together with Isaura Navarro Casillas, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition of the Valencian Government, and Santiago Gómez Ramos, President of APPA Renovables, kicked off this event full of knowledge and innovation.
Within the framework of this congress, Iñigo Bertrand, CEO of Edison Next Spain, participated in the panel discussion titled ‘2023: the consolidation of Self-Consumption after a record year’. During this presentation, Bertrand highlighted the steady growth of Photovoltaic Self-Consumption, a sustainable and clean solution that continues to gain momentum in the energy landscape.
Furthermore, advances in the field of Power-to-X were shared, a revolutionary technology that transforms renewable electricity generated by photovoltaic or wind farms into other forms of clean energy. This innovation aims to accelerate the decarbonization of global industry and bring both companies and society closer to a more sustainable future.
At this point, Self-Consumption is a fundamental part of the global solution for a profitable transition towards decarbonization. For the development of these solutions, the company is committed to the power of innovation, the adoption of Self-Consumption, and the development of technologies such as Power-to-X with the aim of achieving a more sustainable world.
In this colloquium on energy and self-consumption, several important trends and advances in the field of photovoltaic modules were also discussed. Leading manufacturers Longi, Jinko, and JA, which represent approximately 70% of the market, announced their agreement to use M10 cells in their modules.
This initiative will standardize the width of the modules, allowing for greater performance and efficiency in self-consumption systems. Another technology under development is tandem technology, which combines different N-TYPE technologies. And, although it is still in the experimental phase, it is beginning to be developed and promises to further boost the efficiency and performance of photovoltaic systems.
Regarding the financing of self-consumption installations in the current economic environment, a growing interest in the stock market for assets related to self-consumption was highlighted. And as self-consumption projects become more complex, with the inclusion of components such as batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicles, it is expected that greater capital will be required.
Therefore, the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model is emerging as a popular option for financing self-consumption projects. Furthermore, the renewable energy sector, and self-consumption in particular, must become more sophisticated at a financial level to ensure its sustainable growth.
Regarding future prospects, the importance of professionalizing the self-consumption business was highlighted, which will guarantee the continued success of the sector. Additionally, the possible implementation of virtual wallets or batteries was mentioned as recommended solutions for larger-scale installations with significant surpluses.
For his part, Juan Carlos Sanjorge Portabales, Regional Area Manager of Edison Next Spain for Galicia and Asturias, participated in the round table titled “The urgent emergence of the heat pump and the electric vehicle”, held as part of the second day of this important event organized by APPA Renovables.
During this panel discussion, Sanjorge defended the importance of heat pumps as a solution that integrates perfectly with self-consumption. These heat pumps allow the electrification of industrial thermal processes, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative. By leveraging self-consumption surpluses, industries can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and gases, paving the way towards decarbonization and the Net Zero goal.
At Edison Next Spain, we work to lead the way towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. Therefore, sponsoring this highly relevant event for the energy sector is another step in the company’s commitment to promoting the transition towards cleaner and more efficient energy, helping to build a better future for generations to come.
With more than 350 in-person delegates and 120 online participants, the 4th Self-Consumption Congress concluded with a presentation by Jon Macías, Commercial and Marketing Director of Edison Next Spain and president of APPA, together with Marcos Lacruz, President of AVASEN. In his speech, Macías emphasized the importance of the current moment, stating that “we are not in an era of change, we are in a change of era.” In this way, he underscored the significance of the transition towards a more sustainable energy future, in addition to highlighting the crucial role of green energy solutions in this transformation.
